Basti to Kashi

Sunita Pandey’s family of seven did Kashi Vishwanath and the ghat in an Innova. The car stopped where the lane starts. Bags stayed locked. They walked.

The car was spotless, driver was very respectful, and the pricing was exactly as quoted. Not a rupee extra.

213 km. Four to six hours from dawn. Temple hours are in the Shri Kashi Vishwanath Trust FAQ: 3 a.m. to 11 p.m. Dashashwamedh aarti is a different clock. An Ola at Godowlia will not be waiting when you come back out of the gali.

The road

Expect four to six hours Basti to the old-city drop, not the three hours a straight-line map implies. Fog on winter mornings between the Purvanchal towns is real. We would rather leave at 4:30 a.m. than invent a faster highway.

The Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple Trust FAQ is the document to trust over hotel WhatsApp forwards. It states the temple remains open from 3:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. It lists four aarti types: Mangla (3:00–4:00 a.m., report 2:30 a.m., Gate 1), mid-day Bhog (11:15 a.m.–12:20 p.m.), Saptarishi (7:00–8:15 p.m.), and night Shringar (9:00–10:15 p.m.). Entry from the Ganga ghat side into the corridor is listed as 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Those slots are why an overnight in Varanasi is the sane default. Mangla aarti is not compatible with a 9 a.m. departure from Basti. Saptarishi aarti collides with people trying to also hold a boat seat at Dashashwamedh. Pick one evening ritual unless the group is split.

Ganga aarti is another event

Dashashwamedh evening aarti is not a temple aarti. Local operators commonly cite roughly 5:45 p.m. in winter (October–March) and 6:45 p.m. in summer, for about 45 minutes, with crowds that fill the steps well before lamp ignition. Treat those minutes as seasonal, not as a statute. Arrive early or watch from a boat you booked that afternoon — not from a car, which cannot enter the ghat.

How we run the car

• Drop at the edge of the old city

  The driver takes you as far as the permitted drop. Bags stay in a locked car. You walk the corridor. Phones and water go in a small bag. This is not optional choreography; it is the street.

• Overnight beats heroics

  Most Basti families overnight. The car and driver stay on duty or on night halt as quoted. Next morning you can do dawn ghats without having already sat six hours in a sedan.

• Combine with Ayodhya only on purpose

  Basti → Ayodhya → Kashi is a yatra, not a same-day loop. If you want both, we plan two days and two drops, not a single heroic GPS line.

• Group vehicles

  A Tempo Traveller is right for 12–16. It is wrong if you expect it to idle on Godowlia. The group walks; the vehicle waits where the police let it.

Tell us whether you need Mangla, a daytime corridor darshan, Saptarishi, or Dashashwamedh. Those four are different clocks. We confirm the Varanasi route on WhatsApp, including night halt if you stay. Check shrikashivishwanath.org the week you travel — trusts update closures faster than blogs.
